Not every device handles eSIM the same way. This quick guide walks you through checking compatibility on iPhone, Samsung, Pixel, and other popular handsets.
The single best thing you can do is install your eSIM before you travel. You'll need a Wi-Fi connection to download the carrier profile, and doing it at home means you're not scrambling at the airport. Open your phone settings, navigate to Mobile Data or Cellular, and tap "Add eSIM". Scan the QR code from your confirmation email and follow the prompts. The whole process takes about 90 seconds.
A 3 GB plan covers a typical week of navigation, social media, and messaging without video streaming. If you plan to stream music, use video calls, or work remotely, step up to 10 GB or more. It's always better to have slightly more data than you need — running out mid-trip is a frustrating experience, and topping up requires purchasing a new plan.
Turn off automatic app updates and background refresh for data-heavy apps before you travel. Use Wi-Fi whenever it's available — at your accommodation, cafes, and restaurants — and save your eSIM data for when you're out and about. Most modern phones show a live data usage counter in Settings, which makes it easy to track how much you've used.
Your physical SIM stays active throughout the trip, so calls and texts to your home number continue to work normally. If you need to receive calls abroad without paying roaming charges, consider enabling Wi-Fi calling on your home SIM — many carriers offer this at no extra cost.
